Apr 2009 - Plans for extra evening at youth centre

Ref: PR2184
Date: 03/04/09

Plans are being developed to open Crofton Young People's Centre on a Friday evening to provide young people in the area a safe and constructive place to meet.

Wakefield Council's Youth Development and Support Service (YDSS) are working with partners, the community, local young people and anyone else who feel they can help create something positive for local young people in the area.

Cllr Pat Garbutt, Wakefield Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "We are working towards providing extra opportunities for young people who may feel they need something to do and occupy them.

"By hopefully extending the service, it will mean more young people are off the street and into a place where they can meet and enjoy themselves in a positive environment."

The YDSS are hoping to meet late April at the centre to move things forward, with a view to starting the work with young people in May. Prior to this, local young people will be consulted and encouraged to take an active part in the planning, so they can have a say over what they want from the centre on a Friday night.
