A range of new eye-opening publications are being launched this month to help make Wakefield communities even safer and stronger.
The Shared Future cohesion framework is being unveiled by the Wakefield Together partnership along with a migrant workers welcome pack and asylum seekers and refugee myth busting booklet.
The partnership - made up of key agencies including Wakefield Council - is introducing this framework to help us all understand more about each other and say how the partnership will work together to develop this understanding.
A new welcome pack is being launched to provide migrant workers with important basic information about living in Wakefield. Many migrant workers come from Poland, so a Polish version of the welcome pack has also been created to help workers settle in.
The new myth busting booklet sets out the differences between asylum seekers and refugees.
Cllr Olivia Rowley, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for community safety and cohesion, said: "These new publications and frameworks are about bringing people together and the partnership is helping make that happen. The aim of the framework is to help citizens have a stronger sense of belonging to the places they live.
"Dispelling misconceptions is at the heart of our myth-busting leaflet, which will be a real eye-opener for many people.
"And the migrant workers welcome pack will be a vital tool for helping people not only settle in the area but feel part of the community in which they live. The more we understand about each other, the stronger our communities will be."
We are a very diverse district – around 321,000 people live here and there are approximately 350 asylum seekers at any one time. Around 80% of asylum seekers who are successful in their claim choose to stay in our district and contribute to its economy.
The launch event, to be opened by Wakefield Council’s chief executive Joanne Roney, will be held at Kinsley & Fitzwilliam Community Resource Centre, Wakefield Road, Kinsley, on Tuesday May 26, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
