June 2009 - Dragons getting fired-up for Wakefield Speaks

Local business experts including The Apprentice star Claire Young will be lining up as part of the next Wakefield Speaks events.

The events will feature a Wakefield Dragons Panel including locally-educated Claire Young, along with Margaret Wood, chair of Wakefield First, Jane Walton, campaign leader for Make Your Mark, and Daniel Rajkumar, managing director of Web-Translations.

The panel will challenge delegates to come up with innovative ideas for promoting Wakefield as the place to be.

Wakefield Speaks is held on behalf of Wakefield Together, the local strategic partnership (LSP) for the Wakefield district, which is made up of all the key organisations who deliver services to people that live, work and visit the area.

Cllr Peter Box, leader of Wakefield Council and chairman of Wakefield Together, said: "We want to give citizens the chance to talk about the issues that matter to them and let them know about some of the key actions we have taken as a result of what they told us at earlier events.

"It’s vital that people from across the district have a say on what matters most to them. These events have proved extremely popular and we hope the introduction of the Dragons Panel will help inject even more excitement and really get the ideas flowing."

Wakefield Speaks always focuses on a key priority in the district, and this time it is skills, enterprise and work. People will also be updated about some of the plans that will be implemented across the district.

The first Wakefield Speaks 2009 event will be held at the Chasley Hotel, Queen Street, Wakefield on June 24 from 5pm. The second will be on October 3 at the Skills Xchange, Glasshoughton, from 9.15am.

Drop-in sessions offering information on applying for jobs as well as advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau will run alongside the event from 5pm to 9.15pm. No appointment is necessary.

The Speaks events are free and a buffet will be provided. For more information and to book a place please call 01924 306769 or email communityengagement@wakefield.gov.uk
