New and expanding businesses are being encouraged to take advantage of Wakefield Council’s business support schemes through the credit crunch.
For 20 years the Council has invested in enterprise hubs across the district to support new business start-ups, create jobs and help existing businesses.
We now have eight centres - home to nearly 90 businesses which employ in excess of 220 people – that can help drive forward businesses even during the current economic climate.
Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Our centres have an excellent track record in helping people achieve their business dreams and get their companies off the ground.
“We all know how challenging the economic climate is at present, which is why our service is important now more than ever.
“Helping existing companies expand is another string to our bow and that can be just as important, as it ultimately means creating more jobs and opportunity.”
The Cedars Business Incubation Centre is one of the flagship hubs and focuses on high quality, knowledge-based jobs and has recently been supporting local firm Jordans Solicitors’ investment in new Castleford premises owned by the Council on Wesley Street.
Jordans have been working closely with the Council’s enterprise and incubation team and became new tenants in July 2009. Stephen Procter, partner at Jordans, said: “We worked closely with Wakefield Council and in particular the Enterprise and Incubation team. They were instrumental in making this move possible for us and they put in a lot of time and effort. A huge thank you is due to them.”

There’s more help at hand through the Wakefield Economic Taskforce which is supporting businesses with advice and help through the recession.
Led by the Council and Wakefield first, the taskforce runs a website, helpline and business buddies scheme to support businesses of all sizes. For help visit www.wakefieldworks.com (see related links) or call 0845 124 2009.
