The Wakefield Together partnership is launching its Positively Ageing strategy and action plan in November, with TV presenter Harry Gration set to be the guest speaker.
The population of the Wakefield district is changing and by 2021 it is expected that 40 per cent of the district’s population will be aged over 50.
To help plan for this changing trend, Wakefield Together – a partnership bringing together key agencies in the district who deliver services and activities – is launching Positively Ageing on November 9 from 10.30am at the newly refurbished Navigation Warehouse on Wakefield’s waterfront.
The aim is to put people aged 50 and over at the heart of developing services, support and facilities for people 's health and well-being in order keep them active, independent and prevent the need for any looked-after care in future years.
The term ‘ageing positively’ was developed to reflect the aspirations of people to plan for and approach life’s changes as they age, in a positive and active manner.
The term embraces the idea of making the most of opportunities which promote an individuals sense of independence, dignity, good health and contribution to society.
Harry Gration will be the guest speaker at the launch event and will be speaking about his achievements made in later life.
Cllr Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for adults, said: “This is a major step forward for the partnership in promoting and supporting older people across the district.
“This is about giving everyone a louder voice so they can have a say on issues that really matter and this will help shape future services and provisions for years to come. The best thing we can do is to enable older people to be active and find things to do while helping them stay independent so they can continue to enjoy their lives. The strategy and action plan plays a major part in this.
“It’s great to have someone like Harry championing Positively Ageing, a successful and well respected broadcaster, who will further raise its profile.”
The aim of the strategy is to plan for the future to make sure the contribution and achievements of older people across the district gain the recognition they deserve, raise their profile and change perceptions.
For example it looks into improvements in public transport to support their concerns and more targeted information that’s relevant to services for older people, like benefits , tackling fuel poverty and greater involvement of older people in their communities and decisions that affect their lives .
The strategy has been developed through extensive consultation with members of the public and local organisations.
Attendance is by invitation only, but the media are invited to attend for pictures and interviews.
