A film made by young people for young people, aimed at reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, has been recognised at a major regional awards ceremony.
The Impact and Consequences DVD was shortlisted in two categories at this year’s Making a Difference in Yorkshire and Humber Awards.
And at the ceremony on November 26, the DVD was highly commended in the Stepping up to the Challenge award category.
The DVD was produced by students from Airedale High School with support from the Wakefield Together partnership and it reveals the consequences resulting from anti-social behaviour on the individual, the victim, emergency services and the wider community.
Cllr Peter Box, chair of Wakefield Together, said: “I am delighted to see this DVD and the hard work of these young people recognised.
“Their hard work and dedication, with support from Wakefield Together, has seen a DVD created which has opened the eyes of young people and adults across the district. It will help educate us all on the issue of anti-social behaviour, its impact and of course the consequences.”
A clip of the film was shown to Prime Minister Gordon Brown when he visited Wakefield recently, where he met the students who made the DVD and praised the work they had done.
The DVD was produced in direct response to what young people from around 14 schools said in a special crime and safety workshop at a recent Student Speak event, which is part of the Wakefield Together programme to engage with people across the district.
Partners who supported the project include Wakefield Council, West Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, the Ambulance Service and Her Majesty’s Courts Service.
