Apr 2011 - Have your say – community consultation on safety

Ref: PR 2980
Date: 26/04/2011

The Wakefield Together Partnership is carrying out consultations on community safety in the district.

Following earlier sessions which took place in local area forums, partners including Wakefield Council, West Yorkshire Police, NHS and Wakefield District Housing will use the results of the consultations to write a new Community Safety plan.

The plan will contain details on how the partnership will tackle safety issues such as anti social behaviour in the district.

Wakefield Council’s Service Director for Communities, Glynn Humphries said: “It is only by finding out how people feel about safety in their neighbourhoods and getting their views around how we can work together to tackle any issues, that we can continue to make the District a safe place to live compared to other districts across the Country.

“I would encourage citizens and those who work in the District to take a few moments to complete the questionnaire.”

Chief Superintendent Marc Callaghan, Wakefield District Police Divisional Commander, said: "Our work as a partnership is all about asking local residents what they want, what issues really affect them and their quality of life. Then rather than one agency tackling the problem in isolation we all work together to reach a lasting solution.

“I would encourage people locally to let us know what their priorities are for the coming years so that we focus on the things that really matter. Latest figures show that the district is the safest in the county for crime including burglary, robbery, car theft and criminal damage.

“There are now around 22,000 fewer crimes recorded than in 2004 but we cannot be complacent about this and need to maintain our impetus in these ever challenging times."
