A new state of the art short-break centre for children with disabilities, will celebrate its opening with a tree planting and plaque reveal on July 18.

Star House, at Purston Jaglin next to Purston Park, has been purposely built to meet the needs of disabled children from the short-break service.

The short-break centre was a joint investment by NHS Wakefield District and the Local Authority and the new service will be managed by Wakefield Council Family Services on behalf of the partnership.

The centre has seven bedrooms and is fully equipped with hoists and other mobility equipment. It also has a sensory room, soft play room, computer room, sensory garden, outdoor play equipment, all weather play surface and vegetable garden.

Cllr Olivia Rowley, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Star House is an excellent facility offering children with disabilities a chance to play and have fun in a safe and stimulating environment.

“It also gives a much needed break for parents and carers which can often be invaluable. Having a facility like this in the district will bring tremendous benefits to the children and their families and we are delighted to have helped make this a reality.”

Gill Galdins,Chief Operating Officer, NHS Wakefield District, said: “Star House represents a significant investment in short-break services locally. This wonderful new facility provides skilled and experienced staff with purpose built accommodation in which to provide specialist care for young people.”

The centre will be formally opened by Cllr Olivia Rowley and Gill Galdins, Chief Operating Officer, NHS Wakefield District on Monday 18 July 4-5pm and it is an opportunity for families to have a look at the facilities available.
