Oct 2011 - Eastmoor residents rally together in a day of action

Ref: PR 3174
Date: 06/10/2011

Staff from Wakefield Council, West Yorkshire Police, Wakefield District Housing and other partner agencies worked with members of the community to improve the Eastmoor and Southern Washlands area last week.

The event took place on Friday September 30 at St Swithun’s Community Centre on Arncliffe Road. There was lots of fun going on with stalls and activities focussing on community safety, environmental improvement, dog chipping, recycling and fire safety.

Local school children also got involved in improving the environment by helping the Council’s Countryside Rangers at the Southern Washlands Nature Reserve.

Cllr Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities, said: “The day was a huge success with everyone getting involved in helping to improve Eastmoor, I hope that the positive work the partnership has done in the area will continue and that future days of action are just as successful.”

Wakefield Together partners were very keen that the local community were involved in identifying areas for action as well as participating on the day. Services will now continue to work with the local community to build upon the excellent work carried out on the day.

Inspector Richard Close of Wakefield Central Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Cleaning up on grime, crime and environmental issues is a great way of getting everyone to pull together. Hopefully by taking part in days of action such as this local people will feel empowered to take more ownership of their community."

The next Wakefield Central Day of Action will take place in Lupset on October 27 followed by a Day of Action in Plumpton/Darnley on November 17.
