Oct 2011 - Welcome to Wakefield

Ref: PR 3181
Date: 12/10/2011

A major advertising campaign to raise the profile of Wakefield has been launched.

‘Welcome to Wakefield’ aims to attract cultural visitors from London and passengers on East Coast mainline. Hundreds of posters will be appearing across the London bus network and in underground stations, as well as on billboards at stations from York to London.

The campaign, funded by the Wakefield Together Partnership, will be showcasing some of the district’s main attractions, such as The Hepworth Wakefield and Trinity Walk, to bring more visitors to the Wakefield.

Cllr David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for Culture said: “Many tourism businesses including hotels and attractions have given their support to the campaign, which also includes a new visitor guide for the district.

“We want to raise awareness of the district and what we have to offer tourists, as well as encouraging overnight stays which in turn will boost the local economy.”

Tourism generates an estimated £324 million for the district. The Wakefield Together Partnership is working alongside The Hepworth Wakefield and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to raise Wakefield’s profile through the campaign.
