Tackling Poverty and Growing Our Economy - The Wakefield Poverty and Prosperity Commission

The economic downturn and government spending cuts have hit the District hard and are placing increasing demands on our services and local communities and families. We need new ways of thinking and new ideas to meet these challenges.

As part of this the Partnership and Leeds Metropolitan University have set up a new body to tackle issues of poverty, inequality and economic growth across the district.

The Commission’s key role will be to look at issues and recommend new ways of tackling issues around:

  • skills and education
  • health
  • regeneration and unemployment

As part of its work the Commission also wants individuals, organisations and businesses to contribute their ideas. The Commission will produce its final report in Spring 2012. The findings and recommendations of the Commission will then be used to inform both strategic and service planning across the partner agencies and how we work with other service providers.
